Whore Island

I’ll be honest, I had fun working on this book. It’s a bit racy, more than a little insouciant, and over all just a fun read. The author, Dalia Lance, is every bit as unapologetic as her main character Randi Michaels, and that made for some hilarious Skype calls let me tell you.

Don’t let the title fool you. This is a story about a woman taking charge of her sexual pleasure, something society generally still frowns upon. It’s a story about finding out who you are as a normal, sexually active woman, what you want, and how to go about getting it. Done in a quasi-memoir style, it was a challenge for me as an editor because I’ve never done this kind of story style before. We really wanted to make sure the humor stayed in, as well as the character’s personal growth through her experiences. Dalia was clear that this wasn’t to be porn, and while a bit, um, explicit at times, it’s most definitely not that.

With Dalia’s signature Whoretips scattered throughout, advice on everything from making sure to carry condoms to walking away when the encounter just isn’t right, this book does a very nice job of capturing the changing perception of values in today’s world. Women who actively pursued their own pleasure have been labeled for centuries as “bad women”, but in Whore Island Randi shows us that just isn’t the case anymore. Women are free to choose, to take control, and find what works for them, in their careers and in the bedroom.
